Statement

The imagery in my art primarily consists of relief prints of woodblocks and linoleum. I explore methods of intaglio and screenprint as well. I use multiple methods to add color to the prints such as Chiaroscuro and Chiné Colle. More recently, I am now exploring the use of different wooden matrices that could be used to pull prints from such as musical instruments. To coincide with this experimentation, I hope to push the boundaries of the printmaking process.

I use the imagery of speech bubbles and bold lines to assemble the essence of comic book imagery. I create images depicting memories, characters, and myths. I believe the stories shared through art play a significant role in the building of culture.

I take a sense of artistic responsibility from contemporary Mexican artists such as Maria Izquierdo, José Guadalupe Posada, and Lola Alvarez Bravo, all who depicted honest visual forms of life for Hispanics, through satire, prints, and photographs. I am particularly moved by image composition and visual hierarchy of Mexican contemporaries. Furthermore, I am interested in the revolutionary framework that printmaking has brought to the history of Mexico. I often find himself using various symbols and icons, much like that of historical Mesoamerican imagery.
Seldom do I refer to Mexico directly in my work, however I think it is important to recognize that framework I have to my family history.
